2024 Week 18 (Texas)

2024 Week 18 (Texas)

The last week of the season is always an interesting one. Most years, it ends in Texas. And this was the case in 2024. Now, unlike in previous weeks, I’m not going to recount each individual game. As all twelve of them would take forever as I was the photographer and videographer of the postgame press conferences. My time covering the play-by-play was limited though I did do tweet updates as scores happened for select games. Or parts of games. Continue reading “2024 Week 18 (Texas)”

2023 Week 17 (Texas)

2023 Week 17 (Texas)

My 2023 season ended in Texas as it has done quite a few times in the past. The first, though, since the fall 2021 season. In 2022, I passed on Texas in exchange for two games on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A mix of work and pleasure. However, for Texas it was a fun drive down to Arlington, Texas. 2023 Week 12 (Texas)

2023 Week 12 (Texas)

This week wasn’t supposed to be in Texas. At the start of the year, I had figured I’d be making the trip to Iowa as I had made for several years not including 2020 when I went to South Dakota instead.

But, I had decided I wouldn’t be making the trip about two weeks ago for work. Which was unfortunate because there was also two games in New York I’d have liked to do. Both CSP and Salamanca were at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park for the Section 6 Finals. Continue reading “2023 Week 12 (Texas)”

2022 Year In Review

2022 Year In Review

After the last two years, it’s hard to say that a season was unusual. 2020 had so many twists and turns. Including spring games until June in New York City. Last year, there was some turbulence with scheduling. And I hurt my back after my trip to Arizona and things went downhill as the season went on.

This year, I was mostly healthy. Though getting older is not without its pitfalls. And things seemed to go on as planned. But my entire year had been affected by things including the economy and personal matters. I usually have a rather open personal life in the fall for football. And just work a bit more in the first eight months of the year. 2022 wasn’t that year. Continue reading “2022 Year In Review”

2022 Week 4 (New Mexico)

2022 Week 4 (New Mexico)

I was going to be in Texas this weekend. The oil patch was calling me. Friday morning, I was going to be halfway between Kermit and Mentone. Mentone is in Loving County, the least populated county in the country. The oil boom hasn’t necessarily changed that ranking yet, but the growth west of Kermit along route 302 is impressive. The road is being four-laned west of Kermit to handle all the oil and construction traffic. Thursday, though, left me with some options. And though Texas options were available, I decided to stick to New Mexico. Continue reading “2022 Week 4 (New Mexico)”

2021 Year In Review

2021 Year In Review

After an unimaginable 2020 season, this year was a bit more relaxed. Though rushed. With the previous season ending in June, there was little downtime before the 2021 season started. This affected my usual summer plans, as well as made the financial planning a bit more precarious. I wasn’t sure, in the summer, just how much I would or could do. But, I was intent on doing as much as possible. And though a lot was ‘old’, there was a lot of ‘new’ thrown in. Including my month long trip around the middle of the country. Continue reading “2021 Year In Review”

2021 Week 17 (Texas)

2021 Week 17 (Texas)

I’ve been to games in Texas every season since 2009. I have been to the Texas state finals each year since 2011. This marks the tenth championship weekend I had attended at AT&T Stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium). The lone exception has been the 2015 games that were hosted at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Also, the 5A doubleheader at San Antonio in 2009, and the single 1AD2 game hosted in San Angelo this past January. In total, I had been to 107 state championship games in four different venues. Of those, 94 were at AT&T Stadium. Though, I had been to 98 games at the stadium (adding a quadrupleheader in 2010). And 107 games in Arlington (9 games were down the street at Globe Life Park). 2021 Week 10 (Great Plains)

2021 Week 10 (Great Plains)

So, these are all going to be just a tad late. The Sunday after the Week 9 games, I was back in El Paso, Texas and my back was just not having a good time. My next stop was near Lubbock. And I managed through the week and on Thursday afternoon, was looking for any game. I had planned to be in Dodge City for the Six-Man Championships of Kansas, dubbed the Wild West Bowl, but other than that, hadn’t thought about this weekend too much in advance.
