I wasn’t expecting any more football for the 2020 season. It was already the end of May when I found out that I was wrong. And I found it almost entirely by accident. After Section 6 of New York had completed their season on the 15th, I was mildly curious if any other sections had yet to finish their season. I was certain that the state as a whole had set the mid-May deadline for games in the Fall II season. But, I went to Maxpreps of all places and searched for NY schedules. 2020 Week S11 (New York)

So, 2020 was unlike any other year. And though I’ll write a full recap of the season, this is the final week of games. My 34th weekend of high school football of the 2020 season ended with just two games. In Western New York. Most years, my season has ended at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. A few times elsewhere. 2020 Week S9 (New York)

2020 Week S9 (New York)

So, Week S9 went as planned. One of the first weekends where there wasn’t a single surprise. The only big question was which Friday game to cover. Traveling with my friend to cover the games, we compromised on our Friday and Saturday night games in New York.

The two SectioN Vi options on Saturday were Dunkirk hosting Maritime/Health Sciences and Wilson hosting Akron. Despite the drive, the Wilson game looked just a bit better for a matchup. Despite the 2 hour drive from Sherman and the tight winder to get there. So, for Friday, we went with the repeat pick. Salamnca was hosting Randolph at Veterans Memorial Park. Although Pennsylvania had one more week of games, my plans had already switched to New York and ending my season with four weekends in the Empire State. 2020 Week S5 (New York)

Before this spring season hadn’t yet started, I had planned for as many weekends as possible in New York. Section 6, to be specific. But, Virginia, Maryland, and Philadelphia area games started first.

And though I was going to be in New York for the opening weekend, the weird Philadelphia schedule made the decision so easy. Philadelphia had moved almost all of their games to Thursday. With one game on Wednesday and another on Monday, of all days. Continue reading “2020 Week S5 (New York)”

2018 Week 14 (New York)

2018 Week 14 (New York)

New York has a patchwork of high school football. The largest, and most notable association, is the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Consisting of 11 Sections across the state, it covers almost all of the public high schools in the Empire State. The lone holdouts are the New York City schools, who are members of the Public School Athletic League (PSAL). Formerly, the Buffalo City Schools were also independent, playing for the “Harvard Cup”. 2014 Week 11 (New York)

Week 11 (New York)

This was one of the best weekends of football I’ve gotten to experience in a while. In four days, in three cities, I and my girlfriend took in 13 NYPHSAA Sectional Championships. The week’s planning started with two triple-headers at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY. Because of a Bills home game on Sunday, the high school games were set for Thursday and Friday. This meant that Saturday would be open.

The original plan was then to drive into Pennsylvania, and see a District 10 Quarterfinal between Greenville and Northwestern, and then a short trip over to suburban Youngstown for Liberty-Gilmour Academy. It was during this planning, that I noted Syracuse was hosting four Section 3 championships at the Carrier Dome on Sunday. As the Browns were already playing on the road Thursday, I wasn’t in a big hurry to get back home. A further glance of the schedule shows Rochester was playing their regular Section 5 championships at Sahlen’s Stadium on Friday and Saturday. So, my mind was made up for me.
